Meet Joti & Banasa - Founders & Creators of Ksoni

Ksoni’s products were ones I got extremely excited about when I discovered them online, and even more so when I got the opportunity to include the range in my store.

I caught up with Joti & Banasa to find out more about Ksoni;  the mission, the journey and the future plans for this innovative brand.

For those who don’t know Ksoni, are you able to tell us more about yourselves and your products?

People often ask us, what does Ksoni mean? Ksoni means "Earth" in Sanskrit - and our individual experiences tackling plastic waste and its impact on the earth inspired us to start this business together!

For Joti it was witnessing an immense amount of plastic waste during a dive trip in South East Asia in 2017 after several years working in large consulting firms with huge eco footprints. She returned to the UK with a renewed drive to cut plastic out of her life after seeing first-hand the impact it is having on our beautiful oceans. After making a number of easy changes in the kitchen like cutting out single-use plastic bags and using refillable cleaning products, she realised that there are very limited options to cut plastic in the bathroom, especially in the shower.

For Banasa it was working in health & wellness businesses throughout her career. She observed growing numbers of consumers who wanted to purchase products that made a positive impact on the environment but felt they were lacking in options that actually worked for their diverse bodies or lifestyles. Having made her own natural shampoos and conditioners for several years, she also wanted to overcome the stigma around eco-friendly products being of lesser quality than their mass produced counterparts.

When we first met in 2018, we immediately hit it off and within months had decided we would launch a natural beauty brand together, setting ourselves a huge challenge to launch a 100% plastic-free product, which is no easy feat in the bathroom! From there Ksoni was born.

What is the mission of Ksoni?

Ksoni is a body care brand designed to extend the eco-mindset from the kitchen to the bathroom through our range of natural products in plastic-free packaging. Our vegan & cruelty-free shampoos, conditioners & body washes are infused with essential oils for a gorgeous aromatherapy experience. We use aluminium cans to house our products due to their high recyclability content and rate - yes that is shampoo & body wash in a can!

We promote inclusive sustainability in the bathroom via our innovative & circular packaging, formulations and distribution.

Bathroom products in a can is a clever concept – can you tell us more about the journey?

It was absolutely that, a journey. It took us about a year from addressing the problem we wanted to solve (more sustainable options that work in the bathroom) to launching a product. We went down many routes before settling on the humble aluminium can. Once we started exploring this option it just made the most sense! The aluminium can is a form of packaging that consumers are well accustomed to using and the eco credentials (infinitely recyclable, highest recycling rate and content – just to name a couple!) all stacked up to make a great sustainable alternative for the bathroom.

Did you launch all products at the same time?

We set ourselves a very ambitious target of launching 9 individual products at the same time, 3 collections with 3 products (body wash, shampoo and conditioner) in each. This was important to us as we wanted to launch a range of products that was inclusive to a diverse set of hair and skin types. We have managed to pull it off and get great feedback on each one of our collections! We are also currently working on our next collection launch for later this year.

Ksoni is a young brand, do you still get excited when you get a new order?

Absolutely! We still do a little happy dance whenever we get an email about a new order and even more so when we receive emails from different shops who are interested in stocking our products. We have had a great amount of interest in our products on a daily basis and lots of fantastic feedback from customers which definitely still makes our day!

You are in the process of becoming a B Corp, can you tell us what that means and why it was the right step for you?

Having both worked in large multinational corporation we have seen first-hand how difficult it is to balance profit and purpose when the tone at the top is often driven by the bottom line. We have also seen how difficult it is to make and manage change in large and growing organisations, especially cultural changes.

It’s important to us to be able to signal to current and future investors that our company is already beginning to measure our social and environmental performance with the best tools available. We also want to be able to demonstrate strong governance by adopting the legal framework early on as an organisation to protect our mission and brand equity.

By joining the B Corp movement, we are able to connect with a network of more than 2000 other like-minded organisations in the Certified B Corp community. This will help us navigate our way in ensuring we use profits and growth as a means to a greater end which to us mean a positive impact for our employees, communities, and the environment.

What tips do you have for anyone who is embracing the eco-friendly lifestyle?

Small changes equal big impact! It can often feel like a daunting task to try and tackle all aspects of your life and try to make them eco – friendly. Start small and work towards consistency, once you have made a few small changes and find you are doing them/using them consistently then think about what other changes you might make. Slow and steady wins the race in this case!

What has been your proudest moment so far?

Our proudest moment so far without a doubt has been launching our products in late October 2019. We took what was just a twinkle the year before and made it into a real, sustainable and sellable product. At the time 12 months to get to launch seemed like a long time but in retrospect we can now look back at how much we achieved in that short time and how far we have come!

What’s next for Ksoni?

We are working diligently to expand distribution of Ksoni products – so that they can be accessible to more people who are on their sustainability journey. We are also working on launching a new collection later this year!
